5 Best Photo Opportunities in Cancun
Lee Van Grack
Cancun easily beats other travel destinations when it comes to the best spots your lens can catch and pursuing your travel photography hobby. The turquoise crystalline Caribbean waters alone assure the best photo opportunities Cancun can offer. Much more than that, you have the Riviera Maya, a 90-mile coastal strip with the world's second largest barrier reef. There is also Cozumel Island, with its beautiful beaches and snorkeling and diving locations, there are ecological water parks with all kinds of fun activities and, to top that, the ruins of ancient Mayan cities and cultural sites.
1. The Romantic Photo: On a Sunset Cruise
Cancun is not what one would call a lonely beach; with one hotel tower after the other, it might be a bit tricky to take the perfect sunset picture and capture a romantic moment. That's probably why tour operators started to offer sunset cruises. On the open sea, with Cancun's skyline in the red evening sky, are the best photo ops Cancun offers for sunset shots. Cruises vary, and the number of persons that share this romantic adventure depends on the boat chosen, whether it's a catamaran, galleon replica, or a paddle-wheel boat. The most romantic (and costly) version is a cruise on a private yacht, just for two sweethearts.
2. The Quirky Photo: A Pirate Assault
Tourism operators in Cancun have a really diversified offer. Any imaginable adventure can be booked, and that even includes a pirate assault cruise. Participants go on board ships that either bring them to Isla Mujeres just north of the Zona Hotelera (hotel zone), where they are offered dinner on a beach in a pirate-film setting, or just cruise on the sea. What they have in common is a simulated pirate assault with slightly varying scripts. The idea is to have a party night out with drinks, dinner, music and a show. All those who like this kind of amusement are sure to find great shots of the very quirky variety.
3. The Family Fun Photo: Wet'n Wild Water Park
Even with the clearest blue sea in front of the hotel, kids will always prefer the hotel pool and there is no way of getting them out before hours have passed. Cancun has its own little water heaven, not only for children but also for the grown ones. The Wet'n Wild water park is located right in the Zona Hotelera, and is the perfect place for a fun day for the whole family. With a wave pool, a fun ride in the Bubba Tub, the little Bumper Boats maneuvered by the kids themselves, and lots of other water activities, this is the surrounding for taking the best family shots in Cancun

4. The Scenic Photo: Tulum
No doubt your Cancun travel photography will contain tons of shots in, with and around the unbelievably clear and turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. Tulum, which is located about 90 miles south of Cancun, is outstanding. The ruins of this ancient Mayan city are standing on the cliffs with a view over the palm-fringed and virgin white sandy beaches, with the Caribbean Sea below. The archeological site per se is not as spectacular as others in Mexico. Here it is the combination of Mayan temples with the Caribbean Sea in the background that makes this place unique and provides you with the best Cancun scenic shots. The beaches around Tulum are a paradise, but still refreshingly non-touristy and mostly deserted, thus allowing for beautiful landscape shots without tons of vacationers in the background.
5. The Classic Photo: A Night Out in Playa del Carmen
Once you've enjoyed the nightlife in Cancun's Zona Hotelera to the fullest and are still looking for more parties, just move a bit southwards to the vibrant city of Playa del Carmen. "Playa," as locals call it, has its Fifth Avenue, and all of the area's activities are centered around this pedestrian zone of shops, bars, restaurants and, of course, lots of clubs with live music and dancing. Your best photo ops while staying in Cancun are a guaranteed thing here in Playa, where you might start your night with a nice cocktail in a beach bar at sunset, move on to a restaurant for some typical Mexican delicacies, and at midnight move on to the dance floor. Don't stop shaking before the sun rises!
