Hilton Head invokes presumptions of a quaint, beach town, but this unassuming island is actually chock full of ideas for fun. Mere steps from the luxurious resorts and cozy beach homes, here are five adventure activities in Hilton Head we dare you to try:

1. Dolphin Whispering

You're probably heard of the horse whisperer and the dog whisperer, but how about the dolphin whisperer? That's exactly what you'll find at one unique Hilton Head tour that takes you out on the water with Captain Chris, known around the island as "The Dolphin Whisperer." Although dolphins can often be seen around the waters of Hilton Head, Captain Chris is known for the number of dolphins that frequently swim up to his boat. The boating tour is two hours long, and is ideal for family adventure in Hilton Head, with dolphins swimming right up alongside the boat.

2. Sport Crabbing

Crabbing has become a popular activity up and down the coast of the Carolinas, with many teenagers and families taking to the beaches on the weekend to do a little crabbing. This often includes setting a series of traps and walking up and down the shoreline for a chance to catch some of the speedy critters. However, you've never really gone sport crabbing until you've done so on a boat.

The Crabber J II is renowned for its sport crabbing adventures, taking visitors out daily for a fun sport-crabbing excursion. Crabbing aboard the Crabber J II is a family event that is especially enjoyable among kids and teenagers. The boat departs daily from Shelter Cove Harbour, taking guests out to the Broad Creek waters. It's not unusual to see a few dolphins along the ride to the crabbing waters. Prizes are often given out to children who catch the most crabs. Tours start annually at the beginning of April and go through Labor Day.

3. Kiteboarding

Somewhat of a new adventure activity in Hilton Head, kiteboarding is quickly catching on as an exciting beach sport around the world. Everyone is familiar with surfing and flying kites, but the sport of combining the two is relatively recent, especially to the South Carolina coastline. Not considered a surfing mecca, Hilton Head is one of the best places to learn how to kiteboard.

Kiteboarding is unique in that, unlike surfing, it uses a custom-designed kite, so enthusiasts get to enjoy the type of serious airtime that it's impossible to achieve while simply surfing. With consistent wind, and beaches that are void of rocks, Hilton Head is a great place for beginners to get their feet wet, so to speak. Kiteboarding schools are located up and down the South Carolina coast, offering lessons for beginners.

4. Horseback Riding

For a break from the water and something thrilling, yet at a more mellow pace, the island offers great horseback-riding territory, too. Lawton Stables is the premier place for equine outdoor activities in Hilton Head. Featuring an animal farm that is free to visitors, its pride and joy is the horse stables, where visitors can take a pleasant ride on the Lawton trails.

5. Boating the Outback

You've heard of the Australian outback, but have you heard about the Hilton Head outback? Unlike its Australian counterpart, which is located through the vast inland of the country, Hilton Head's outback tours involve winding your way in and out of the many inlets and coves of the island. Leaving from Shelter Cove Marina, visitors tour tidal marshes aboard a Carolina skiff. The second half of the outback tour takes off from Page Island, where guests grab a kayak and visit the isolated tidal creeks. Tours are four and a half hours, and equipment and instruction are provided.
