Sony Sees 'Very, Very Strong' Christmas Gaming Sales in Europe

Updated

Sony Corp (SNE) forecast "very, very strong" holiday sales for its video-game consoles in Europe, with high demand for the PlayStation 3.

Andrew House, head of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, said that European sales will help Sony exceed its target of selling 15 million PS3s in its fiscal year.

"Sales have been significantly up year-on-year in a market that has been overall slightly down," House told Bloomberg News.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe distributes and markets Sony gaming products in Europe, The Middle East, Africa and Oceania. Since launching the PlayStation 3 in November 2006, Sony has sold more than 38 million units worldwide.

The company has seen strong demand for Move, its motion-activated product. Sony unveiled Move in September.

Move has seen "very significant sales in the first month since launch, somewhere in the region of 1.5 million units for the new controller across just Europe," House told Bloomberg News. "The initial sales response has been so far in excess of our initial plan that we'll probably be looking at accelerating production."
