GM Recalls 320,000 Chevy Impalas to Fix Seat Belt Defect

General Motors said Friday it is recalling more than 300,000 Chevrolet Impala sedans to fix front seat belts that may not adequately protect passengers in a crash.

GM said the front seat-belt webbing in 322,409 Impalas from the 2009 and 2010 models year may not have been properly secured to lap belt anchors mounted to the side of the seat nearest the door.

Anchors in vehicles that have the defect may separate during a crash, possibly resulting in injuries. The automaker knows of no injuries or deaths related to the condition, GM said in a statement.

The recall affects about 303,000 vehicles registered in the U.S., and more than 19,000 in Canada, the Detroit-based auto giant said.

Dealers will inspect seat anchors for both front seat belts and if necessary reinstall the anchors. Affected vehicle owners will be notified beginning Oct. 25 by mail to bring their cars in for inspection.

Any repairs related to the defect will be done at no cost to consumers, according to GM.
