Black Friday hiring roundup 2010: More holiday jobs available

Kohl's As the holidays get closer, more stores are hiring seasonal help. The Black Friday rush means that companies need enough employees to handle the overload of customers. For those hunting for jobs, there are plenty of seasonal spots available.

Stores such as Kohl's and Brookstone plan on adding more seasonal helpers than last year. Kohl's anticipates hiring up to 40,000 temporary workers, 20% more than last year. Most of Kohls' additional jobs will be part time, allowing workers to put in anywhere from a few hours to around 20 hours per week. Brookstone is increasing its seasonal staff by 36% more than last year, for a total of as many as 2,000 additional workers. Brookstone also plans on adding 150 extra kiosks and holiday stores this year, better than 40 more than the 109 added in 2009.

Pier 1 Imports is also expanding its staff for the holidays. The company plans on adding 10 extra workers per store on average, although some of the spots have already been taken. Jo-Ann Stores Inc.expects the economy to result in shoppers making more homemade gifts this holiday season, meaning more business for its craft supply and fabric stores. In anticipation of the shopping surge, Jo-Ann Stores Inc. will add 3,000 temporary positions.

Seasonal job searchers can play Santa this year by taking on a job at a delivery company. UPS is adding an extra 50,000 helpers, the same amount as in 2009. Most of the jobs are part-time and pay starts at $8.50 an hour, but can go as high as $10.50 depending on the position. Roles such as delivering packages as a driver's helper earn the higher rates. At FedEx, more than 275,000 team members are busy preparing for the holidays and temporary workers will be hired as needed.

The extra shoppers mean that stores need extra security during the holiday season. Grab a security gig with AlliedBarton, which plans on taking on at least an additional 1,000 workers this year. The temporary workers normally start on Black Friday and work through New Years. Jerold Ramos Sr., manager of talent acquisition for AlliedBarton told Walletpop in an e-mail, "Even though the economy is still in a downturn, retailers are ramping up the security portion of their engagement. We like to hire people who look at this temporary position as a way to see if a security career is a solid fit for them. A temporary position with AlliedBarton can be a springboard into a new security career."
