UAE and RIM Resolve BlackBerry Dispute

The United Arab Emirates will not suspend BlackBerry services on Oct. 11, Reuters reported, citing state news agency WAM. The UAE and Canadian smartphone maker Research In Motion (RIMM) resolved their dispute over access to email and other data.

The dispute began as the UAE demanded RIM find a way to send information to and from the BlackBerry devices using local servers -- rather than servers outside the UAE -- so that the government could have access to messages. The UAE said that otherwise it would suspend BlackBerry service to about 500,000 subscribers starting Oct. 11.

According to WAP, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority has confirmed that BlackBerry services are now compliant with UAE's telecommunications regulations and therefore will not be suspended.

Saudi Arabia and India also previously threatened to cut off services but have reached agreements with RIM.
