Top Pickpocket Destinations Revealed
In fact, all the "world's worst pickpocket destinations" this year are in Europe, the website says (in previous years places including Buenos Aires and Hanoi have also made the list).
London is cited for the first time in the No. 10 spot, and TripAdvisor's Emma O'Boyle says while the "vast majority of visitors have a safe and enjoyable experience," travelers still need to be on guard in the city.
The survey is based on calculations of the number of times travelers use the term ""pickpocket" in their TripAdvisor reviews in the past 12 months.
Barcelona and Rome had the top two places on the list last year as well. Paris moves up from the No. 5 to the No. 3 spot.
Other places of concern, in the order that they appear on the list, are Madrid, Athens, and Prague; followed by Costa Blanca, Spain; Lisbon; Tenerife, Spain; and London.
TripAdvisor says travelers in all the places should take steps to protect their wallets and bags, especially when viewing popular outdoor attractions. Carrying only what you need each day, and not being conspicuous with your money or valuables is also advised.
Travelers need to "stay on their toes" in high-traffic areas, says TripAdvisor's Brooke Ferencsik.
"You're looking at some very popular European cities with some great tourist attractions, many of them outdoors," he says. "Those unfortunately represent some great targets for pickpockets."
