Frito-Lay Scraps Noisy SunChips Bag

Updated

Whisper it - Frito-Lay is about to say goodbye to its environmentally-friendly but very noisy SunChips bag.

Eighteen months ago, Frito-Lay, a division of PepsiCo (PEP), made lots of noise about a biodegradable SunChips bag made from plant material.

Now, after complaints that compared the sound of the bag to everything from a lawn mower to a jet engine, the company is removing the material from the packages of five of six SunChips flavors, USA Today reported.

"Clearly, we'd received consumer feedback that it was noisy," says Aurora Gonzalez, a Frito-Lay spokeswoman, told USA Today. "We recognized from the beginning that the bag felt, looked and sounded different."

The bag is noisy thanks to an unusual molecular structure that makes it more rigid. On Facebook, there is an active group with more than 44,000 friends called "Sorry But I Can't Hear You Over This SunChips Bag."
