Studios including Sony Pictures (SNE), Walt Disney Co. (DIS) and Warner Bros. (TWX) are in talks with cable companies about offering movies soon after their theater release for as much as $30 per showing.
The companies are in discussions with In Demand, a partnership of Cox Communications, Comcast Corp. and Time Warner Cable, Bloomberg News reported.
Disney is also discussing streaming films on Web-linked devices including the Xbox and the Sony PlayStation 3.
The new services could help offset a decline in DVD purchases. Normally, there is a lag of three or four months between a movie leaving theaters and appearing on DVD and cable.
Sony Corp. has already tested a similar service by offering the movies "Hancock" and "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" on Bravia TV for $24.95.
