Oracle Wants to Buy Semiconductor, Software Companies

Oracle Corp. (ORCL) wants to buy semiconductor companies and the makers of industry-specific software, CEO Larry Ellison said.

Oracle has bought more than 65 companies in the last five years. Adding chipmakers would help the company develop its presence in the market for computer hardware.

"You're going to see us buying chip companies," Ellison said at a meeting in San Francisco, according to Bloomberg News.

Ellison said he wants to follow the example set by Apple Inc (AAPL) and own more intellectual property underpinning computer chips. Apple bought semiconductor manufacturers to help develop gadgets like the iPad and iPhone.

Doug Freedman, an analyst with Gleacher & Co., named IBM's (IBM) chip division AMD and Nvidia Corp. as potential targets for Oracle.

"You've got to think it's focused on enterprise hardware, on the server," Freedman told Bloomberg News. "AMD jumps off the screen."
