Move Over Detroit: Largest U.S. City with a Casino is Now Philadelphia

Philadelphia got its first casino Thursday, and with it also became the largest U.S. city to have one, according to the Associated Press. Philadelphia boasts about 1.55 million residents, while Detroit -- now the second-largest U.S. city with a casino -- has a population of 910,000. Meanwhile, only some half a million residents live in Las Vegas city limits.

The SugarHouse Casino, which plans to employ approximately 900 workers, opened for business on the Delaware River today, the AP reported. It's the 10th casino in the state of Pennsylvania, and about 4% of its gross revenue will go to Philadelphia, according to the wire service. All together, the Pennsylvania casinos account for $4.3 billion in state tax revenue, which helps reduce property and wage taxes, SugarHouse Board Chairman Fajt told the AP.

Not everyone's happy to have the "largest casino city" distinction, however. The SugarHouse opening also has attracted protestors that have been decrying the establishment.
