Abbott Laboratories is recalling 5 million containers of its best-selling Similac infant formula over concerns that the powdered formulas are contaminated by insect parts or larvae, the company said.

Abbott said a beetle was found in the production area of a manufacturing facility and says it can't rule out the possibility that insects or insect parts could have gotten into the formula. If infants were to consume formula containing beetles or beetle larvae, the main risk is gastrointestinal irritation that could lead to discomfort and the refusal to eat, Abbott said.
