Guide to teacher discounts

Teacher in the classroomBack to school discounts are winding down, but many retailers offer year-round savings to educators. They work a lot like senior discounts: most businesses offer a discount, but do not widely advertise it, so always ask. Here is the list of teacher discounts I rounded up. Got any others to add?

Ann Taylor Loft - Get 15% off every time you shop with Loft Loves Teachers.
Apple - Educators can get up to 5% off on selected items. Verification required. Restrictions apply.
AT&T - K-12 school district employees are eligible for a 15% wireless discount
Barnes and Nobles - Educators get 20% off all items for classroom use and 25% off during Teacher Appreciation Days.
Book Warehouse - Offers 15% off to educators.
Books-A-Million - Many sites report a 15% off discount with ID, but I was unable to confirm. Call your local store to check.
Borders offers 20% off on qualifying purchases under $1,000 and 25% off more than $1,000 with an Educator Services Card.
Cost Plus World Market - Educators in San Francisco and Oakland are eligible for 10% off. Check with your local store to see if you can get the same discount.
Dell - Many sites report anywhere from 2%-10% discount on most purchases, but I was not able to confirm. Call your local store to confirm.
FedEx Office - Get 15% off most products as part of their National Educators Discount program.
Half Price Books - Get 10% off year round with their Teacher & Librarian Discount card.
HP - Join the HP Academy for Teachers and get up to 8% off regular pricing. Verification required. Only certain models apply. See store for details.
J.Crew - At one time, J.Crew offered 15% off to Teach for America educators, but it's unclear if that discount remains.
Jo Ann's - Sign up for their Teacher Rewards Discount card and get 15% off your purchases.
Office Depot - Their Star Teacher Program has various discounts and offers.
Office Max gives teachers the "contract prices at any OfficeMax retail location, whether it's for supplies or for services from OfficeMax ImPress," their site says. Read more.
Sea World Orlando -Florida teachers can get a free unlimited admission to Sea World Orlando as part of the Study Pass program, according to MouseSavers.
Staples - Teachers are eligible for increased limits on back to school supplies that are super discounted. If the limit is five, for instance, teachers can buy 25 at the super low price.
Starbucks - Baristas sometimes give teachers a discount if they ask nicely, a reader reports. I'll believe it when I see it!

Thanks to GlobeStudentDiscount, MyEducationDiscount, and Danny Kofke of "How to Survive (and Perhaps Thrive) on a Teacher's Salary," for many of these discounts. .Ask your school or school district's HR department if they know of any other discounts and visit for more than 100 online promo codes listed by store. Some of them appear to be standard discounts, i.e. not tied specially to being a teacher, but some require proof of educator status. If you live in New York City, the Department of Education has a page devoted to teacher discounts. And remember, always ask for a teacher discount!

Caveats: discounts may vary by region.
