Technology giant Microsoft (MSFT) says that it sold $200 million worth of its new videogame Halo: Reach on the game's launch day earlier this week.

The latest game in the Halo series, which pits humans against aliens, had the strongest first-day sales of any game or movie this year, Reuters reported.

The game's success will give Microsoft a lift ahead of the November debut of the company's new gaming system.

"What Halo: Reach numbers tell me is gamers are there. They are willing to buy the great experiences when they come out," Phil Spencer, vice president of Microsoft Game Studios, told Reuters.

The Halo franchise has sold more than 34 million copies in nine years, adding to the popularity of Microsoft's Xbox gaming console.
