Chase Online Banking Dogged by Technical Problems

Updated

Computer problems dogged Chase's (JPM) online banking services for a second day on Wednesday, leaving many customers frustrated.

Problems first appeared on the Chase site late Monday, with customers unable to log on to their accounts. Technicians worked overnight to fix those problems by about 1 a.m. on Wednesday morning.

Unfortunately, the rush of customers to the site on Wednesday meant service was spotty. As late as Wednesday afternoon, customers were experiencing delays.

"A system outage of this length communicates to me that they really don't have a handle on their systems," Vic Caterina, a Chase customer in Chicago, told The New York Times. "My relationship with Chase is now under reconsideration."

Some customers were particularly frustrated by the fact that the bank didn't post updates on its website.

Bank spokesman Joseph Evangelisti said that it did not want to post updates until it had a full understanding of the problem. He said the bank would refund any penalty fees incurred because of the outage.

Bank officials say the problem it may have been a software error caused by a "third-party database company", which made it impossible for Chase to process customer login details.

The bank ruled out the possibility of an online attack.
