YouTube Launches Live Streaming Experiment

Updated

YouTube has entered the live streaming market with an experimental platform involving four media partners.

The Google-owned (GOOG) video website will preview a new live streaming platform in a two-day trial.

The partners are celebrity-focused Young Hollywood, the online TV outlet Next New Networks, the how-to guide Howcast and Rocketboom, the Internet culture Vlog.

"This is just an initial trial, a first step," YouTube product manager Josh Siegel told The Associated Press. "We're going to look at a whole bunch of data about the performance of our new platform and then, based on that, make decisions about how we'll open it up, with the goal of opening it up to all of our partners over time."

YouTube has streamed several events live in recent years, including President Barack Obama's first State of the Union address. For each event, it relied on third-party technology to enable the live webcasts.
