Delta Air Lines to Cut Jobs, Planes at Regional Subsidiary

Updated

Delta Air Lines Inc (DAL) is cutting jobs and retiring planes at its Comair regional subsidiary.

Comair is retiring most of its 50-seat jets in 2011 and 2012, Reuters reported, citing a Comair memo to staff. The memo did not give details on how many of the subsidiary's 2,600 workers will be cut.

"Our current cost structure -- which remains approximately 20 percent higher than our peers on a cost-per-block-hour basis -- does not enable us to be competitive in the current industry environment," Comair President John Bendoraitis said.

Comair expects its fleet to shrink by over 50% to 44 aircraft by the end of 2012.

The staff reductions will affect all departments, Reuters reported.
