Ocean City with Kids: A Perfect Family Day
The perfect day in Ocean City with kids should start with breakfast at one of the city's fabulous restaurants. My recommendation is the Dough Roller. If you are staying near the boardwalk, you can walk to the Dough Roller located at the Breakers Hotel on 3rd Street. There are five locations in all; this is my favorite due to its beachfront location. Don't be afraid if you see a line, it won't take you long to be seated. The Dough Roller has all the usual breakfast foods on the menu, but their specialty is pancakes. I recommended the peach pancakes. For $7.89, you get a stack of pancakes smothered in sliced peaches and topped with whipped cream. For the kids, I would try the chocolate chip pancakes for the same price. They will love the sweet chocolate chips cooked right into their stack of hot pancakes. Not a fan of pancakes? The Dough Roller also offers eggs, French toast, made-to-order omelets and a selection of breakfast sandwiches. The restaurant is open for breakfast daily from 7AM-1PM. Call 410-289-2599 for more information.
Old Pro Golf (410-524-2645, 888-653-7761) offers 7 courses at 4 locations throughout Ocean City. A game of golf is $7 during the day (until 5PM) and $8 from 5PM to close, which is usually around 1AM. Your kids will love the themed courses, full snack bar and arcade, which makes Old Pro Golf a great choice for rainy weather, too. You can find a $1 off coupon, good for each member of your family, on the company's website.
What family beach vacation in Ocean City would be complete without an afternoon trip to the beach? Ocean City has one of the nicest beaches in the country. The golden sands and blue waters will make you forget about the everyday stresses of life with young kids and will give your children an opportunity to play in the refreshing Atlantic Ocean. And with trained lifeguards set up all along the beach, you can sit back and just enjoy watching your kids enjoy building sandcastles and swimming in the waves. Don't worry if you forgot your beach chairs or umbrella at home as you can rent one from one of the many stations set up along the beach.
After you've had your fill of the beach, it's time to enjoy one of the many family-friendly restaurants in Ocean City. Take a walk down the Boardwalk, and you will pass several excellent choices for dining with kids. Great for family vacations, Harrison's Harbor Watch is one of my favorite places to eat. Perched at the end of the Boardwalk with beautiful views of the inlet, they offer an extensive children's menu with reasonable prices. Your kids will love the Pirate Burger, which comes with French fries, applesauce and a drink for $5.50. For those with a more sophisticated palate, Harrison's Harbor Watch offers freshly caught Atlantic seafood and Italian dishes. My personal favorite is the Chicken Chesapeake, a juicy breast of chicken, baked and topped with Virginia ham and lump crabmeat and a savory light cream sauce and Swiss cheese. You'll have many fond memories of Harrison's for years to come. Call 410-289-5121 for reservations or more information. Harrison's Harbor Watch Restaurant is open daily for dinner from 5PM-9PM.
No family travel to Ocean City is complete without a leisurely evening walk on the famous Boardwalk. There are countless places to find the perfect dessert. It is time to walk on the world famous Boardwalk.
My suggestion for the best ice cream on the Boardwalk is Dumser's Dairyland, located right at the end of the boardwalk a short distance from the Harbor Watch Restaurant. Many consider Dumser's to have the best milkshakes in the world. Try the Oreo Crush ice cream, or Hawaiian Delight, a mixture of cherries, pineapples and bananas in vanilla ice cream. Or, for memories of your own childhood, ask for a traditional root beer float. Dumser's is open until 1AM in the summer and is the perfect warm weather treat to close out the day.
After dessert, you can let your kids enjoy the nostalgic amusement park rides the Boardwalk has to offer. From roller coasters to ferris wheels, there is something for kids (and kids-at-heart) to enjoy. If park rides are not your thing, there is a giant arcade for tamer, indoor fun.
There are plenty of benches to sit and watch the sun set over the Atlantic, taking in the beauty of Ocean City and thinking about the memories you'll have from one of the best family vacations you've had yet. It gets cool at night, so don't forget to bring sweatshirts for yourself and the kids. You can also pick one up at one of the dozens of clothing shops lining the Boardwalk. Stop in at M.R. Ducks on Somerset Street on the Boardwalk. Each year they have a new design on their shirts with the year. Make it a tradition and pick one up each year you come to the beautiful Ocean City, Maryland with your kids.
Whether your vacation is a family tradition, or it is your first trip to this charming ocean-side town, you'll feel compelled to come back for more family fun year after year.
