Happy Hour in Houston
Sherlock's Baker St. Pub & Grill in River Oaks
3PM to 9PM Monday-Saturday; all day Sunday
1952A West Gray Street
Houston, TX 77019
Best deal: Half-priced appetizers and drink specials on Fridays
If you want cheap drinks every day of the week, check out the River Oaks branch of this chain bar and restaurant in Houston. During happy hour, you'll find drink specials each day of the week, with wells, domestic drafts and house wines about $1 or $2 each or $6 to $8 a pitcher of beer. Monday nights are You-call-its with drinks $2. The best days to go are Wednesdays (9PM trivia) and Fridays (half-price apps and even cheaper drinks). There's almost always a band playing or big game on, and they frequently add features to their happy hour for special days. There are often specials on Facebook or Twitter, and accessible through the website. Sherlock's has a number of other locations and sister pubs around Houston, which can be also found on their website.
The Derrick Tavern
3PM to 7PM Monday-Friday
1127 Eldridge Pkwy, Suite 600
Houston, TX 77077
This upscale tavern in Houston isn't much to write home about as a night spot, but during happy hour -- especially Tuesdays and Thursdays -- it brings enough to the table to merit at least a text to a friend. On Tex Mex Tuesday help yourself to a free fajita buffet, $3 Mexican beers, $2.75 house margaritas and $2 off premium margaritas and martinis. Thursday brings another complimentary buffet plus $3 martinis and house wines, $2 domestic drafts and wells. Another drawing point is that there are dartboards and a pool table. The Derrick rolls out a Nathan's chili dog buffet during the Sunday and Monday football games, which they show on a 12-foot high-definition projector screen. If you're into sports -- and especially if you're into watching sports in bars -- this just might be your new place.
Cielo Mexican Bistro
2-7PM and 9PM until midnight, Monday through Friday and all night Saturday
300 Main Street
Houston, TX 77002
Best deal: Large house margarita in a fish bowl-esque goblet for $4.50
In case the "bistro" in its name didn't tip you off, this is not your typical taqueria. With white leather chairs, hardwood surfaces and a high, vaulted ceiling, Cielo gives off a hip and modern vibe. And, price-wise, it doesn't get much better than this. On top of the thick n' crispy chips and house salsa delivered to your table (or bar stool) upon arrival, there are plenty of good options under $3, such as pico quesadillas, tamales, taquitos, cheese potato fritters and more. For $5 you can try the brie and spinach quesadilla, mussels or chipotle chicken casserole. For drinks, $2.50 gets you a small margarita or glass of sangria. Martinis and draft beers cost $3 and glasses of house wine are $4. If you're with a few friends, you might consider the $20, 36-ounce megarita. If you're looking for the most bang for your buck, the large house margarita comes in a fish bowl-esque goblet for $4.50.
909 Texas Avenue (inside the Rice Hotel)
Houston, TX 77002
Best deal: Half-price appetizers, pizzas, cocktails and wines by the glass
If you're looking to get a little dolled up and perhaps do some dancing, Sambuca's the place for that. This swanky, dimly lit jazz cafe in the historic Rice Hotel attracts all ages and groups, but I wouldn't advise you come here with the loud guy from work. During happy hour, all appetizers, small plates, pizzas, cocktails and wines by the glass are half-price, making most of the cocktails $4.50 and most dishes between $4 and $6. The margherita pizza is fabulous and if you're anything of a cocktail person you must go for one of the house martinis. Some of them are almost straight vodka--even the ones with juices are strong--but somehow they go down smooth.
Brix Wine Cellars
4PM to 7PM Monday-Thursday; 11:30AM-7PM Friday
110 Vintage Park Blvd., Suite T
Houston, TX 77070
Best deal: $2 premium draft beer
If you're not in downtown or central Houston, you don't need to feel left out when it comes to high-class happy hour. Decorated to mimic the interior of a stone wine cellar, this intimate wine bar boasts a big selection of wines, many of which can be had for $5 a glass during happy hour. If you're a wino but have a significant other who generally steers clear, rest easy because happy hour also brings $2 draft beer. Of course in an elegant place like this, you probably won't want a Bud Light or Miller Lite. The three beers on tap rotate seasonally, but to give you an idea, last time I was there they had Saint Arnold Fancy Lawnmower--a local microbrew--Samuel Adams Summer Ale and Kôstritzer Schwarzbier. For food, they've begun offering a special munching menu for happy hour featuring things like cheese samplers, gourmet chicken salad and hummus. Get there towards the end and stay for live music Wednesday through Sunday.
4PM to 8PM Monday-Friday
2303 Smith Street, Suite 100
Houston, TX 77006
Best deal: $.35 buffalo wings on Wednesdays
If the cute pun alluding to the epic Tarantino flick isn't enough to get you in the door, the cheap drinks and daily eats specials should be. Every weekday brings $2 domestic pints (or $6 for a whole pitcher), $3 imports and $4 vodka cocktails and martinis. But that's par for the course. The best part is the food, which features mostly your usual bar plates plus a Royale with Cheese. On Mondays and Tuesdays, the chef's menu is half-price, and Wednesdays bring 35-cent buffalo wings. But the best days are Thursday, with two-for-one appetizers, and Friday when they're half off.
