Hilton Head with Tweens: A Perfect Family Day
The perfect day on Hilton Head Island starts at Palmetto Bay Sunrise Café (86 Helmsman Way near Palmetto Bay Marina, 843-686-3232). At this cozy café, you can enjoy a hearty breakfast until 3PM, giving you enough time to sleep in on your Hilton Head family vacation with tweens. Your kids are hungry, and Palmetto Bay Sunrise Café is ready with a great selection of menu items to start your day on a high note. My favorite breakfast at the café is the create-your-own omelet. Omelets can be made with a wide range of ingredients and cheeses. Try a three-egg omelet with cheddar cheese, jalapenos and tomatoes for a spicy morning treat. The restaurant also offers quiche, French toast and delicious pancakes. Tweens can order orange juice, and the café has decaf and regular coffee, perfect for the energy you need to get through a day of relaxing family travel in Hilton Head. Palmetto Bay is open Monday-Wednesday from 8AM-3PM. Menu items start at $5.99. After a great breakfast, you're ready to start playing in the beautiful Atlantic Ocean.
Head over to Harbour Town Yacht Basin at Sea Pines Plantation, where H20 Sports (149 Lighthouse Road, 843-671-4386) has everything you need to go boating, water skiing and parasailing. They offer two-hour charters, and their captains are Coast Guard licensed and are very conscious about safety, perfect for worried parents on a family vacation to Hilton Head with tweens. When the sun starts to sink, dry off and get ready for a filling, traditional seafood dinner at CQ's Restaurant.
CQ's Restaurant (140 Lighthouse Road, 843-671-2779), a Harbour Town favourite, has a cozy, warm dining atmosphere, and the food and service are both excellent. The restaurant boasts pine floors, charming mantels and stained glass, all full of Lowcountry character. Outdoor dining is available; call for reservations. CQ's is open daily March-October from 5:30PM-10PM and November-March from 5PM-9:30PM.
After a very filling dinner, walk off those added pounds with some shopping. Sea Pines and Harbour Town offer a variety of fun shops. Your tweens will want to go to the Cinnamon Bear Country Store (1507 Main Street, 843-671-2219), open 9AM-10PM daily, where hundreds of teddy bears will tempt your kids. If you still have a little bit of room (or just have a sweet tooth), the shop has a fudge and ice cream shop. You will also want to head over to Bailey's Ltd. (147 Lighthouse Road, 843-671-4715) to browse their selection of gifts and fine art. Bailey's is open 10AM-6PM Monday-Friday and 10AM-3PM Saturday. They are closed Sunday.
As the stars settle into the sky, it's time for a moonlight walk on the Hilton Head beach with your tweens, discussing the highlights of what just may become your best family vacation yet.
