Student Who Breached Airport Security for Kiss Gets Federal Fine

Call it an expensive kiss. The doctoral student who breached security at Newark Liberty Airport in order to kiss his girlfriend goodbye, forcing the shut down of a terminal, has been fined by federal authorities.

The amount of the civil penalty was not disclosed.

The incident occurred January 3, when Haisong Jiang ducked under a rope at the airport and entered a restricted area because he wanted one more opportunity to lock lips with his girlfriend, who was heading to California.

As a result of the security breach, a terminal at Newark was shut down for six hours.

Jiang, who is from China, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge in March, and was also fined $658 by local authorities, in addition to having to serve 100 hours of community service.

According to the Transportation Security Administration, the federal fine ends the case against the Rutgers University student.
