Free car seat checks for Child Passenger Safety Week in September
The agency estimates that 75 percent of child restraints aren't properly installed, and so encourages parents to take time that week to check children's car seats. Car crashes are the leading cause of death for children ages 3-14. This age group accounted for 4 percent of total fatalities in 2008, according to NHTSA statistics.
Inspection stations featuring certified technicians can be found at police stations, hospitals, fire stations and AAA offices in all 50 states and U.S. commonwealth territories.
To find the nearest inspection location, use the NHTSA's searchable locator database. Consumers should check each individual location as some require appointments while others have open hours.
