Fire destroys shoes of Nazi victims at Polish museum

A fire at the Majdanek concentration camp in Poland has destroyed one of the wooden barracks and about 10,000 shoes of Holocaust prisoners displayed at the Nazi death site.

The Majdanek museum says the cause of the fire is suspected to be electrical. Damage is estimated at 1 million zlotys, or around $330,000.

An estimated 80,000 people, including some 60,000 Jews, were killed at the SS-run camp near Lublin in occupied Poland between October 1941 and July 1944, when it was liberated by Soviet troops.

The damage comes nearly three months after floods seriously damaged the Auschwitz concentration camp site. The Auschwitz site receives close to 600,000 visitors every year.
