McDonald's (MCD) reported total sales were up 6.8% during July. Comparable, or sales at locations open at least a year, rose 7% in the past month, topping estimates of 4.8%, according to FactSet.

In the U.S., July comparable sales increased 5.7%, the company said. In Europe, they were up 5.3%, and in Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa, sales were up 10.1%.

The company said that beverages, including the recently launched McCafe Real Fruit Smoothies and Frappes along with value-based drinks, were top contributors. Core products and McDonald's all-day, everyday value menus were also key drivers for the month.

"Our customers are at the heart of everything we do, and our strong July sales performance reflects our commitment to them," said CEO Jim Skinner. "We're listening to our customers and offering the right combination of high-quality food and beverage choices, convenient locations with extended hours, and outstanding value across the entire menu."

McDonald's reported global comparable sales increased 4.8% in the last quarter as well as in June, but analysts expected a 5% rise in the quarter and a 5.3% rise in June.
