Veteran's charity chief used stolen identity while misdirecting funds to GOP

A nationwide arrest warrant has been issued for the former director of the U.S. Navy Veterans Association, a man known as "Bobby Thompson" whom investigators now believe used a stolen identity to commit widespread fraud.

"The real Bobby Thompson, whose identity was stolen, including his Social Security number and date of birth, has absolutely no connection to the U.S. Navy Veterans Association," Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray, active in the investigations, said in a public statement . "We don't know who this individual is yet, but we do know that he is not Bobby Thompson."

The person reportedly used the same false identity to buy a UPS mailbox in 2003. The mailbox became the collection point for donations. Ohioans gave a reported $1.9 million to the charity since then.

Public records show thousands of dollars in donations to the charity were funneled by "Bobby Thompson" to support conservative Republican political candidates.

Whoever the director of the charity is, he has gone missing since investigations began in June. The Ohio attorney general continues to advise consumers to stop donations to the charity and now asks for anyone with information on its director to contact the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation.
