Microsoft Co-Founder Paul Allen to Give Away Most of Fortune

Microsoft (MSFT) co-founder Paul Allen plans to give away most of his $13.5 billion fortune. In a statement, Allen said that his "philanthropic efforts will continue after my lifetime," The Wall Street Journal reported.

Allen co-founded Microsoft with Bill Gates in 1975. He left the company in 1983 and became an investor in a range of industries including media and cable.

Last month, Bill Gates and his wife Melinda called on billionaires to publicly commit to giving away at least half their money.

Allen has already given away about $1 billion, including $400 million through the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation.

In the statement, Allen said his estate would support causes including not-for-profit scientific research such as the Allen Institute for Brain Science.
