Apple giving away free iPhone 4 cases to fix reception problems

At a hastily-called press conference today Apple addressed the iPhone 4 reception issues which many have called "Antennagate" and had led many to call for an iPhone 4 recall. At the event Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, did not announce an iPhone 4 recall, but he did announce that Apple would be giving every iPhone 4 owner a free iPhone 4 case.

After telling those in attendance that reception issues are common to all cell phones when held and playing a humorous YouTube clip, Jobs told the reporters in attendance that Apple would be taking action to appease customers by giving away free iPhone 4 cases starting next week.

For any iPhone 4 purchased before September 30, Apple will offer users the choice of an Apple Bumper or one of several other iPhone 4 cases. To get your free iPhone 4 case you will need to go to a special page on the Apple website which will be available the week of July 18.

If you have already purchased a Bumper case from Apple the company will be issuing a refund for the full purchase price. If you have an iPhone 4 and aren't satisfied with these solutions Apple will allow you to return the phone within 30 days for a full refund.

Consumer Reports, which placed the iPhone 4 at the top of its SmartPhone rankings, last week said that it couldn't reccomend the iPhone 4 due to antenna issues; though Consumer Reports later stated that the iPhone 4 works with an Apple Bumper and called on the company to fix the problem by giving away free Bumpers. This move should appease most consumers as well as Consumer Reports since it will address the iPhone 4 reception issue.

Apple also announced that it would soon address other issues with the iPhone 4, such as the proximity sensor problem which doesn't turn off the screen when talking on the phone, resulting in extraneous button presses and accidental hangups.

Even though there is no news on a permanent hardware fix, if you have an iPhone 4 and are able to fix the reception problems by using a case, as Consumer Reports demonstrated, there's no need for you to return your brand new iPhone. But, if you still have issues we are glad to see that Apple is offering a 30-day full refund.
