Spinach salad recalled in three western states for possible E. coli
The recalled spinach includes Ready Pac's Baby Spinach variety of Spinach Temptations 6-oz. bagged salads with use-by dates of July 4 (Product Code 11707B, IR127121), and July 8 (Product Code 12007B, IR130373).
The recall extends only to products with the use-by dates or product code sold in the following states: California, Washington and Arizona. No other Ready Pac Foods are included in the recall.
The voluntary recall was issued due to a confirmed positive result for E. coli 0157:H7 in a random sample test conducted by the FDA. No illnesses related to these products have been reported.
E. coli 0157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and in severe cases, kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). HUS is most likely to occur in young children and the elderly, and can lead to serious kidney damage and death.
Because the recalled products may still be displayed on store shelves, the recall extends to retailers as well as consumers, urging that any potentially affected spinach be dispose of immediately. The Irwindale, Calif., firm says it has notified all the retail customers who received the salad bags to remove them from their shelves.
Consumers should check their refrigerators for Ready Pac Baby Spinach, Spinach Temptations 6-oz. bagged salads with the recalled use-by dates and product codes. Use-by dates can be found in the upper left hand corner of the package, with the product codes located immediately underneath.
Consumers who may have purchased the affected products are asked to record the use-by date and product code, immediately throw them away, and contact Ready Pac Consumer at (800) 800-7822, Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Pacific Time) to obtain a full refund.
All retailers who received this product are asked to reconfirm with their distribution centers and all individual stores to ensure none of the recalled Baby Spinach remains in their inventory or at store locations.
A separate notification will be forwarded to all relevant Ready Pac retail customers. For additional details, retailers are asked to contact their Ready Pac customer service representative.
