China Renews Google's Search Page License

Updated

Google (GOOG) said Friday that Chinese authorities renewed its search page license. "We are very pleased that the government has renewed our ICP [Internet Content Provider] license," Google said on its company blog.

The Chinese government had previously described the company's attempts to sidestep Chinese censorship as "unacceptable."

Google suggested a compromise: a landing page directing users to a more open Hong Kong-based site. The company's current license runs until 2012, but it has to renew it every year.
