The latest movie in the Twilight franchise netted $30 million in tickets for midnight showings on its opening night, beating the previous installment's $26.3 million.

Fans queued up at multiplexes to watch The Twilight Saga: Eclipse at 12.01 am this morning, The New York Times reported. The movie, starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, tells the story of a teenage girl caught in the middle of hostilities between werewolves and vampires.

The previous release, New Moon, earned a cool $710 million at the box office, thanks to the huge cult following the books and movies have gathered among so-called Twihard fans.
