Sony Vaio recall: Poses a burn hazard

Sony Electronics has issued a recall of its Vaio laptops after receiving 30 complaints from consumers about the units overheating, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

No injuries have been reported. Consumers did report that the overheating caused their keyboards and casings to become deformed, the CPSC said. The computers pose a burn hazard, the agency said.

About 233,000 Vaio laptops are subject to the recall. They are VPCF11 Series and VPCCW2 Series notebooks. They were sold in multiple colors.

The Chinese- and American-made computers were sold at stores and web sites including Best Buy, Costco, Frys, Amazon.com, Sony Style stores and sonystyle.com between January and April for $800 to $1,500.

Anyone who has one of the computers should go to http://esupport.sony.com/US/f1cw2update for instructions on how to update the computer's BIOS firmware. Sony is also providing telephone support and support in its retail stores for installing the update.
