Macy's Inks Deal with Madonna for Material Girl Clothing Line

Updated

Macy's (M) is going into business with Madonna. The singer and her daughter, Lourdes, have designed a line of clothes and accessories that will sell for an average price of $40. The brand, which revives and revises some styles from the star's 1980s heyday, will be called, naturally, Material Girl.

Madonna has been one of the most visible superstars in the world for three decades, and holds the No.10 spot on this year's Forbes 100 Most Powerful Celebrities list, which ranks stars based on income and media visibility.

According toThe New York Times, "Madonna and her 13-year-old daughter, Lourdes, are introducing a line at Macy's that recalls the leather-and-lace days of the 1980s." The products will include shoes, jewelry, handbags and clothing. Macy's has the notion that the line will appeal to teenage shoppers, although Madonna is 51 years old.

Big retailers have bet heavily on celebrity-endorsed products in the past. Macy's teamed with Martha Stewart in 2006 to create a line of home merchandise. That was after Stewart was convicted of insider trading in 2004, but clearly, some celebrities never lose their luster. Madonna may be controversial both in the way she dresses and for her activities on stage, but that doesn't mean she can't sell clothes.
