Spirit Airlines $1 Full Disclosure Fare
But there's a catch. To book the fares you have to be a member of the Spirit Airlines $9 Club, and that costs $39.95 per year.
In a press release, the carrier said its new website "is designed to fully disclose a wide range of options" including fees for checked bags, carry-ons, seat assignments and travel insurance.
"It's all about giving customers options and fully disclosing those options," says Spirit's Chief Marketing Officer Barry Biffle. "Airlines that hide the price of services and other fees in the fare are fooling their passengers into paying more for services they may not even want or need."
But at least one industry watcher, travel guru John E. DiScala, founder of JohnnyJet.com, questioned if the carrier is so into "full disclosure," why they aren't calling their $1 sale a "members-only" sale.
"It's kind of a scam to me," DiScala said. "If you are going to fully disclose then say the $1 sale is for members only and don't note that as an asterisk in your 'Full Disclosure' promotion."
The $1 fares are for specific dates in August, and subject to availability. Spirit flies about 150 flights daily to 40 destinations in Latin America and Caribbean.
Sample routes for the $1 fares are Atlanta to Fort Lauderdale, between Santiago (Dominican Republic) and Fort Lauderdale, between Fort Lauderdale and Nassau (Bahamas) and between Fort Lauderdale and Orlando.
There are also a large number of routes being offered at $9 each way including Washington D.C. (Reagan) to Fort Lauderdale, Chicago to Myrtle Beach and Fort Lauderdale to Cancun. For a full listing of the sale fares click here.
