Nurse in iconic World War II VJ day kiss photo dies

The famous picture of a nurse being kissed by an American sailor in the heart of Times Square appeared in Life Magazine and marked the end of World War II, creating an icon that captured the joyful relief of Americans after the Japanese surrender. On Sunday, a woman widely recognized as being the nurse in the image, 91-year-old Edith Shain, passed away in her Los Angeles home.

It wasn't until the late 1970's -- when she said she saw the photo for the first time -- that she first claimed to be the bussing nurse. Two other women also claimed to be the nurse in the photo, and nearly a dozen men have claimed to be the sailor.
