Toshiba Unveils Libretto W100 e-Reader to Challenge iPad and Kindle

Updated

Toshiba (TOSBF) unveiled its dual touch-screen Libretto W100 on Monday, adding a new trick to a growing list of e-book readers and tablet computers that are taking aim to topple Amazon.com's pioneering (AMZN) Kindle and new-kid-on-the-block Apple's (AAPL) iPad. The Libretto W100 is a funky hybrid of a mini-notebook and an e-reader.

When functioning as an e-reader and held vertically, the integrated dual-screen allows users to page through both displays. And when held horizontally, the lower screen serves as a keyboard and the upper screen as the display monitor. The W100 runs on Windows and is expected to hit Japanese stores by the end of August. Although no price was listed, a Fast Company blog posting pegs it at $1,100.
