Desiree Fontaine, the accused shoplifting reporter from Conn.

Connecticut TV personality and reporter Desiree Fontaine has been charged with shoplifting more than $100 worth of merchandise from a Sears store in Milford, Conn.

Fontaine is a WTNH morning news traffic reporter in New Haven, Conn. and also hosts the station's "Connecticut Style" program. The Associated Press is reporting police charged Fontaine with a single count of sixth-degree larceny, alleging she took $104.88 in goods. She was released after agreeing to a July 7 court date.



Fontaine couldn't be reached immediately for comment today. WTNH News Director Kirk Varner told the Associated Press the station "doesn't comment on personnel matters."

The National Associated for Shoplifting Prevention says that more than $13 billion in goods are stolen from retailers each year, with adults making up 75% of the shoplifters. The group says there's no definitive profile for shoplifters -- celebrities too have gotten caught, actress Winona Ryder and former tennis star Jennifer Capriati among them.
