'Toy Story 3' Rockets to No. 1 in Its Opening Weekend

Updated

Toy Story 3, made by Pixar, the digital animation company Steve Jobs co-founded and later sold to Walt Disney (DIS), is off to a blazing start at the box office. The latest installment of the adventures of Buzz Lightyear & Co. pulled in $41 million in its first day of release on Friday and is set for a $100 million-plus haul for the whole weekend. The movie was the easy No. 1 at the box office for the weekend.

And in a move that smoothly closes the loop connecting Steve Jobs and Pixar and Disney, the studio previously announced that Toy Story 3 would also have its own app for Apple's (AAPL) iPhone and iPod Touch. Said Disney in a statement: "We want fans to have the opportunity to experience the beloved Toy Story characters through games, sounds and personalization timed with the movie launch and beyond." Disney's stock closed on Friday up 0.23% to $35.15.
