Apple CEO Steve Jobs Unveils iPhone 4

As expected, Apple (AAPL) CEO Steve Jobs launched a sleek new version of his company's wildly popular iPhone Monday, incorporating two cameras and a greatly enhanced display. Apple calls it the iPhone 4.

At 9.3 millimeters, it's 24% thinner than the current model. It features both front- and back-facing cameras, along with an LED flash.

"It's the thinnest smartphone ever," Jobs declared (see Engadget's live blog of the Worldwide Developers Conference). The screen on the iPhone 4 has four times the pixel density of the current model, greatly enhancing the accuracy and precision of text input and display.

Trumpeting iPad

Earlier in his keynote, Jobs touted the early success of Apple's iPad tablet computer, which has sold more than 2 million units -- or one every three seconds, as he pointed out. Jobs said knew the device was really "magical" when he received an email saying, "I was sitting in a café with my iPad, and it got a girl interested in me!"

Jobs said the iPad app store now features 8,500 programs, which have been downloaded over 35 million times, or about 17 apps per iPad that's been sold.

And in a direct slam on Google (GOOG), Jobs cited another email he received from the proprietor of periodictable.com, who said of his new iPad app Elements: "I earned more in the first day of selling Elements than I did in the past 5 years of Google ads on periodictable.com."
