Delta Drops Fee for Frequent Flier Travel Awards

Delta Air Lines is doing away with fees for SkyMiles frequent flier award tickets booked at the last minute.

In an e-mail to SkyMiles members, the carrier says members will no longer have to pay a redemption fee of up to $150 "when you book an Award Ticket within 20 days of departure." The change becomes effective immediately.

Award tickets booked further out will also continue to have no award redemption fee, the carrier said.

Jeff Robertson, Delta's vice president, SkyMiles, said in a statement, that drpping of the fee was based on customers' comments and concerns.

It also matches a move made by United last year.

But just when you think it will cost you less to redeem your frequent flier miles on Delta, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that as it drops one fee the carrier is increasing another. If you change a SkyMiles award flight, the fee is going up from $100 to $150, the paper says.

That change fee is still waived, however, for those members who have achieved status in the carrier's elite diamond and platinum level programs.

"It's two steps forward and one step back," Tim Winship, publisher of, told the AJC.
