Marriott to Open Hip Edition Hotel in Hawaii

Reports from Hawaii say Marriott's first hip Edition brand hotel will be located in Waikiki, and open this summer.

Marriott International announced the new high-style brand three years ago, but has been mum on specific development efforts. It's been called Marriott's answer to Starwood's W Hotels.

Edition represents an unusual collaborative between the hotel giant and Studio 54 founder and boutique guru Ian Schrager. His fame, hotel-wise, comes from such fashionable properties as the Morgans Hotel in New York, Delano in Miami and Mondrian in West Hollywood, known for their uniqueness rather than chain appeal.

The Honolulu Advertiser says The Waikiki Edition is being developed in the former Yacht Harbor Tower and will have 353 rooms – more than a typical boutique brand. The paper says staff is being hired, and the hotel could debut as soon as August or September.

The hotel will include a restaurant by celebrity chef Masahuru Morimoto, of "Iron Chef" fame, the paper says. Morimoto also operates a hotel restaurant at the Boca Raton Resort in Florida.

Marriott declined comment, and Schrager representatives were unavailable for comment. The Edition Hotels website does not yet have booking information, but does proclaim Edition the "first truly globally branded boutique/lifestyle hotel on a large scale."
