Former 'Us Weekly' Editor to Head 'Hollywood Reporter'

Updated

The new owners of The Hollywood Reporter aren't kidding around.

First they hired Richard Beckman, perhaps the top ad salesman in the entire magazine industry, to run their newly-created company, e5 Media. Now they've nabbed Janice Min, the former $2 million-a-year editor of Us Weekly, to oversee their marquee title. Min has been named editorial director of The Hollywood Reporter, the trade publication that competes with Variety for entertainment-industry scoops.

Min was editor in chief of Us Weekly from 2003 to 2009. Although she wasn't the one who turned the gossip magazine into the hottest thing on the newsstand -- that credit goes to her predecessor, Bonnie Fuller -- she propelled it to new heights while fending off challenges from a raft of me-too competitors in print and online. And she did it all while dealing with two of the magazine industry's most notoriously difficult bosses in Fuller and owner Jann Wenner.

Her skills as an up-manager will come in handy in her new job. At Condé Nast, where he headed up the lucrative group-sales division, Beckman was known as a hard-charging and hot tempered boss. In his worst excess, he injured a female employee's face, requiring the company to reach a multi-million-dollar settlement with her.

Since leaving Us, Min has floated around, receiving a six-figure advance for a book about celebrity mothers and reportedly pitching a website with a similar focus to companies including Barry Diller's IAC and AOL, parent of DailyFinance.
