After today's big announcement that Zynga and Yahoo will soon become bedfellows, AllThingsD's Kara Swisher piped up saying that, last week, Zynga CEO Mark Pincus flat-out denied that a the two companies had inked a deal, despite the fact that they had been in talks "forever."

"BoomTown actually called Zynga CEO Mark Pincus and asked him specifically about this deal last week and he denied it completely, not even relying on a more appropriate "no comment."

In fact, he noted expansively that Yahoo (YHOO) had completely missed the boat in social gaming and that such a deal was a probably good idea to keep the Silicon Valley icon relevant in the space."

Swisher accompanies her semi-rant with a "photo" of Pincus -- a picture of the lovable wooden boy with an extensible nose, Pinocchio.

Of course, this kin

d of thing happens all of the time between journalist and official sources, though usually someone who has been through a little more media training will simply say, as Swisher noted, "no comment."

Rookie mistakes like this -- and others, such as the big ScamVille scandal last year -- show that even though Zynga is raking in millions, the company still has some maturing to do if it wants to keep up with the PopCap's and EA's of the world.
