Dell Streak Tablet to Launch in June, Joining iPad

Dell Streak tabletDell (Dell) announced Tuesday its Streak tablet will debut in early June at O2 Stores and The Carphone Warehouse in the U.K. Folks should expect to see the Streak in U.S. stores later this summer.

The arrival of the Streak comes roughly two months after Apple (AAPL) launched its highly anticipated iPad tablet, which sold one million devices in its first month. That outstrips the popularity of the wildly successful Apple iPhone, which didn't hit the golden one-million-units-sold milestone until 74 days after its debut. Dell undoubtedly is hoping to garner similar success to aid its squeezed profit margins.

Dell's five-inch, Android-based device comes fully dressed with built-in Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity capability, 2GB of storage, and a 5 mega-pixel camera. Google Maps, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube are pre-loaded. The device will also support updates sent over its Wi-Fi connection, including platform upgrades.

"The Dell Streak hits the sweet spot between traditional smart phones and larger-screen tablets," says Ron Garriques, Dell Communication Solutions Group president, in a statement. "Its unique size provides people new ways to enjoy, connect, and navigate their lives."

Dell is not only competing against the iPad, but will also bump into competition from (AMZN), which makes the popular Kindle reader, and Barnes & Noble (BKS), which has the Nook, all of which offer a six-inch screen.
