2.5 million Step2 push-along buggies recalled after kids are hurt

Two popular Step2 toddler ride-on toys are being recalled because the handles the parents push have fallen off and more than two dozen kids have been hurt after the vehicles rolled away, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

About 2.5 million of the Push Around and Whisper Ride Buggies were sold between August 1999 and March 2010 for $29 to $59. The A pin that attaches the handle of the American-made toys to the vehicle can get loose and detach.

The company told the CPSC it has received 28 reports of the handle detaching -- all of which involved injuries ranging from minor scrapes and scratches to those that require medical treatment. The injuries occurred after the handles came loose and the vehicles got away from the parents and either crashed or caused the child to fall out, CPSC spokesman Scott Wolfson told Consumer Ally.

The buggies come in a variety of colors and have a red "Step2" logo on the handles. Those with the handles attached by a plastic bolt with either a white or black head and nut are not subject to the recall.
