Klean Kanteen water bottle spouts recalled over choking hazard

About 1.2 million Klean Kanteen water bottle spouts are being recalled because they are a choking hazard to children and adults, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada.

The maker, Klean Kanteen Inc. of Chico, Calif., is voluntarily recalling its Sport Cap 2.0 water bottle spouts after six reports of the spouts breaking or cracking in children's mouths as they were drinking.

There have been no reported injuries.

Consumers are urged to immediately stop using the spouts and contact Klean Kanteen, which is providing a free mailing envelope to return the spout. The company is offering free replacements. Call Klean Kanteen at 877-546-9063 or visit the company's website.

The bottles and spouts were sold at outdoor sporting goods stores, including L.L. Bean, as well as grocery and other specialty stores from April 2009 to April 2010. The cost was $5 for the spout and $15 to $28 for the stainless steel water bottle.

The affected spouts are made of black plastic and have an attachment loop. "Klean Kanteen" is stamped on the side of the cap. A photo is available for viewing at the CPSC website.
