Crib recall: 170,000 Sorelle and C&T drop-side cribs

Crib recall: C&T and SorelleParents with babies sleeping in a drop-sided crib with the brands C&T International, Sorelle or Golden Baby should check to see if their crib is included in a recall of 170,000 cribs sold between January 2000 and March 2010.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is urging people to stop using the affected cribs immediately.

The CPSC announced the recall after reports of 104 incidents of the drop side detaching from the crib, creating an entrapment hazard that can strangle or suffocate infants and toddlers.

The problem occurs when the drop-side hardware disengages from its tracks. The drop side then detaches to create a space between the drop side and the crib mattress. Children may slip into the space and become trapped. If the drop side completely detaches, the child may fall from the crib. Slats can also become detached, with the potential for a child to suffocate, strangle or fall.

The CPSC said six infants suffered bruises and abrasions to the head, face, torso or leg. Another five infants who were trapped or fell were not injured.

This recall comes one week after more than 200,000 Graco and Simplicity brand drop-side cribs were recalled because they posed the same risk of a child become trapped between the mattress and the drop side. These recalls are just the most recent in an ongoing string of crib recalls as the danger of drop-side cribs becomes more apparent. The style has been blamed for more than a dozen infant and toddler deaths. Toys R Us/Babies R Us no longer sells drop-side cribs in its stores.

The distributor in today's recall, C&T International/Sorelle of East Rutherford, N.J., is cooperating with the CPSC and providing a repair kit or a coupon. The company also distributed cribs under the name Golden Baby Inc. before 2003.

The cribs, sold nationwide for $300 to $600, were available in natural, white and cherry finishes. Consumers can check for the model number and name on a label attached to the footboard or headboard under a "caution" statement.

They were made in Italy, Brazil, China and Vietnam.e

If you have an affected crib, contact C&T International/Sorelle for a repair kit. Owners of older-model cribs (Hampton, Jackie, Nina and Rita models) will instead receive a $100 voucher for another C&T product.
