Home TV: HGTV's 'Home Rules'
"It's part renovation, part life transformation," says host/life coach and relationship expert Fran Harris. "I think it's much more rewarding when people have to exert a little bit of effort for the rewards they get."
"Home Rules" fits into other tough-love TV shows, like "Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares," where an expert enters a dysfunctional situation to see if they can turn it around for the benefit of those involved. In each episode Fran, enters the scene in order to look at why so many families are struggling to find collected calm in the chaos of their daily lives. On each episode, the beloved Dallas-based life coach teaches families that they do have the tools and abilities to get through their chaotic home scenario -- but it will take a bit of work. Adding conflict into the mix, Fran shows that unfortunately, people are long on ambition and short on wanting to work.
The show teaches distraught homeowners how to deal with the collapse of their marriages - while renovating their houses. Can you have a more awkward situation?
In the first episode the host, Fran helps an estranged couple, Matt and Heather, rekindle their ardor. A new master bedroom and remodeled kitchen are presented as incentives for completing such communication assignments, like listening to each other.
Fran provides such tough love as: "You work on your inner house! We'll work on your outer house!"
Workers tear out pink counter tops and replace rotting planks while Matt and Heather renew their wedding vows. Aaaaah. True love is once again rekindled -- and an old home is given new counter tops.
On last night's episode entitled, "An Unkempt Family Clears Their Clutter, and Begins a New Life in a Newly Renovated Home," Fran coached a sloppy family to clear out their clutter as her team completely renovates their home. She encourages the mom and dad to work as a team. The renovation's meant to give the family a chance at a fresh start - but can they keep it that way or will they just mess up the new pad?
By uncovering the reasons behind all the chaos and clutter, Fran shows the frazzled homeowners that they have a second chance at a better home life. The designs by Fran's crack team of experts show the dysfunctional home-owners what they need to do to keep the project going.
