Mariann Donato Entry #5: Opportunities

I have been afforded the wonderful opportunity of speaking with some terrific people as a result of the AOL blog. Interestingly enough, they break down into two very specific groups: culinary and publishing.

On the culinary front, I'm meeting today with Frances Grace of Dish du Jour Magazine. Fran is probably the very best self-starter and self-reinventor that I've ever had the privilege to interact with. She owns her very own culinary magazine and runs numerous food events in her home base of Astoria and surrounding areas in Queens, New York. She's a creative force and an individual who has had to face many of life's hardships on numerous occasions, but always seems to come out on top. I sense that it's her relentless tenacity and positive attitude that makes her a winner! Our initial phone conversation revealed that we have lots in common, both in our personal backgrounds and the way we feel about food. I think we each commented that "it's a small world," about three times throughout our conversation.

I hope our meeting today will lead to us working together in some facet. She's definitely someone I surely identify with and revere.

On the publishing side, I've learned that there are many authors out there who are in need of direction when it comes to getting their book published. The help they seek doesn't necessarily come in the form of editorial aid; rather, it's more focused on the question of - okay, I've written this literary work, now what?

Being on the sales side of publishing, always with a large house, I guess I always just assumed that authors write books and then either represent themselves or seek the help of literary agents. From talking to about five authors over the last few days, I've discovered that my assumption couldn't be further from reality. I've also spoken with an author who was initially jubilant when his book was picked up by a publisher for publication, but seems to have gotten lost in the mix when it comes to publicity and marketing.

I do believe my experience in publishing could be of use to this growing author base and am excited at the prospect of working together to help them realize their dreams.
