Motel 6 Earns Design Award for "Best Large Hotel"
The awards, announced annually, cover design and architecture elements found throughout all levels of the travel experience, including hotels, restaurants, museums, and train stations.
Motel 6 joined this year's rankings thanks to their recently debuted "Phoenix" design, marking the chain's first makeover in 12 years.
The award-winning design, created by the London-based firm Priestmangoode, includes functional and stylish elements that make the accommodations feel more luxurious than the modest price tag, which starts at $39.99 per night, suggests. Platform beds rest against brightly colored walls, and granite countertops grace the bathroom. Each room also contains a 32" flat screen TV and a settee area, which provides a space where guests can relax, eat, and play games. Other functional design elements include laptop and iPod docks, as well as smart storage spaces that allow clothing and luggage to be stowed under the bed.
"The main objective of the new design was to provide added value to our guests and franchisees, while also minimizing our environmental footprint," Olivier Poirot, CEO for Accor North America, Motel 6 and Studio 6, said in an official press release. "Priestmangoode designed a room that adds value, comfort and style to our guests' experience at Motel 6."
T+L also commented that the use of rounded-off corners and beveled edges made for a "fresh, pop-modern look," and that the rooms maximize "space, utility, and style."
Judges instrumental in the awards include noted fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi and chief curator of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, Valerie Steele.
Currently, the award-winning design is only available in 60 of the 1,000 Motel 6s spanning North America, with 60 more locations slated for upgrades this year.
