Temp Agency Review: Accountemps

A division of Robert Half International (RHI), Accountemps is the "first and largest specialized temporary staffing company for accounting, finance, and bookkeeping professionals." RHI was founded in 1948 by -- you guessed it -- Robert Half, who started a specialized recruiting company in New York City focusing on accounting and finance roles. RHI was named one of Fortune's Most Admired Companies in 2009 and gained the top ranking for temporary firms.

Accountemps maintains recruiting teams in its offices, with multiple offices in large metro areas to maintain localized knowledge of employers and candidates. Teams can range from two to 10 people, and typically rotate responsibilities between account management and recruiting. Accountemps meets all candidates face-to-face and gives standardized skills testing before referring to clients. The company employs recruiters and staffing managers with experience in accounting or finance. According to one staffing manager: "They did have a great training program for someone fairly new in the business. They do have a strong reputation. Some say a good one, others disagree. They do also offer a competitive benefits package. They have a large loyal following and do have an endless database for you to make calls out of all day if that is what you are after." Accountemps offers benefits to temporary employees after a minimum number of billable client hours. The company also offers free online training that qualifies for CPE credit, so accountants can satisfy continuing education licensing requirements and learn new skills. A temp explains some benefits of working with Accountemps: "Flexibility with the type of work or position they can offer you. Chance to experience the life at different companies. Also offer online training courses in business & computer applications like the Microsoft Office Suite." (name withheld, Glassdoor.com)

To satisfy clients who need temporaries for longer term projects, Accountemps hires a small percentage of candidates as full-time employees for its Salaried Professional Services (SPS) program. These employees qualify for additional company-paid benefits. The percentage of SPS professionals varies based on current economic conditions and local client demand but typically is 5-10 percent of total temporaries. An SPS employee describes his experience: "Flexibility and change in an industry that is often monotonous, This company has a great reputation so you tend not to be lumped with 'regular temps' and seen more as a long-term consultant. The online training available for staff is excellent. They have technical tie-ins for field staff that make you feel that you're not quite alone drifting out there on assignment." The company does not disclose client names nor candidate success rates.

Accountemps enjoys a strong reputation, free training, benefits, and staffing managers with industry experience. The company hires a small number of temps on a full-time consulting basis for longer client projects. Accountemps does not maintain in-company offices, so they are less likely to be the preferred provider at Fortune 500 companies.
